Mayssa Karaa live at Zouk Mikael International Festival on July 6, 2017!

|

Born in 1989 in Beirut, Lebanon, Mayssa Karaa attended the Conservatory of Beirut, where she studied piano, music theory and vocal training. In 2006, as a new conflict embroiled Lebanon, she moved with her family to Boston, Massachusetts and she gained a place at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, enrolling in 2008 and graduating in 2012.

In 2010, she performed a concert in honor of the Permanent Representative of the Organisation Internationale de La Francophonie. This led to an invitation to sing in Boston’s historic Faneuil Hall. She went on perform with Italian tenor Pasquale Esposito, initially in Boston and subsequently on tour throughout the United States for four consecutive years. In the summer of 2013, she joined him in Naples for the shooting of the documentary, “Enrico Caruso: His Life, His Music, His City” currently airing on PBS.

In her final year at Berklee, Mayssa became a student of Arabic music composer, educator, and oud and violin virtuoso Simon Shaheen and began to perform in his concerts aroundthe USA. At Berklee, she also delved into Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern and Eastern European music as well as studying jazz.

In 2012, she sang a piece by Hafez Nazeri, in Persian, with the Berklee World Strings Orchestra. She then toured a number of American cities with the World Strings Orchestra.

In the fall of 2013, Mayssa recorded a new Arabic adaptation of Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit, created for the multi award-winning film American Hustle. The soundtrack was nominated to the Grammy Awards as Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media in 2015.Karaa performed the song live for the first time at the prestigious Dubai International Film Festival. After this success, Lebanon's Cultural Minister Gaby Layoun honored Mayssa Karaa with a national cultural award at the AmericanHustle premiere held in Beirut, Lebanon.

Now based in Los Angeles, California, Mayssa is soon to release her own debut album, a groundbreaking combination of rock, pop, and Arabic music that will bring together all her diverse talents and experiences.

Karaa also performed live a new Arabic adaptation of the legendary Bob Seger's song "Turn the Page" along with multi Grammy winning producer Don Was and his all star band in Detroit Symphony Hall (Adaptation -and Arabic Lyrics by renowned Algerian poet and novelist Hanin Omar, Dawn Elder and Mayssa Karaa).

And in September of 2014 on United Nations International Peace Day, Karaa performed at the world renowned Ziggo Dome of Amsterdam before thousands in attendance, a new adaptation of the "Morning of the third millennium" composed by the Rahbani Brothers with pop persian sensation Andy Madadian accompanied by the sixth time Grammy nominated Metropole Orchestra. The event broadcast live across seven continents and over 50 countries.

In April of 2015, Mayssa closed the Abu Dhabi Festival of the United Arab Emirates at the Emirates Palace. The show was entitled WHEN MUSIC MATTERS with a repertoire ranging from classical Arabic to contemporary rock fusion creating an exciting musical bridge between East and West.

She was joined by award-winning singer-guitarist Marcus Nand and Grammy Award-winning American rock icons Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters), Luis Conte, Kenny Aronoff, Michael Fish Herring, Curt Schneider and Sharlotte Gibson.

The headline concert crossed cultural and linguistic barriers and introduced a new generation of Arab-American artists from Berklee College of Music who unite Western and Middle Eastern musical traditions to create unique and innovative music

In May of 2015 Karaa joined Serbian top artist “Slobodan Trkulja” at the prestigious Arena of Belgrade in Serbia and performed different songs in different languages. They closed the show with a song they wrote together, Mayssa sang in Serbian and the audience was mesmerized.

Later in May she represented her home country Lebanon during the International Benefit Ball organized by the International Committee of the LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC ASSOCIATION which chose to honor LEBANON "The Melody of Divine Harmony" after 63 years of activity. The event took place at the prestigious Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and all the revenues were given to talented kids in order to pursue a musical education.
